Yosemite Valley | History, Hiking and More

Stretching over seven miles long and only a mile wide, Yosemite Valley is a mecca for nature enthusiasts. Exquisite scenery found throughout the entire span of the valley has inspired great artists such as Ansel Adams, not to mention thousands upon thousands of Yosemite National Park visitors just like you.

Yosemite Valley

Yosemite valley was formed by glaciation, which left the towering, sheer cliffs we know today as El Capitan and Half Dome. These two most famous Yosemite peaks tower at 3,000 feet and 4,800 feet respectively. Both have helped make Yosemite National Park a haven for hikers and rock climbers.

Rock climbers should take note of what permits, if any, they will need when visiting Yosemite. Half Dome now requires a permit which can be attained through the National Park Service website. Bouldering, however, does not require a permit. Hikers wishing to go on overnight hikes should also check the National Park Service website to ensure all appropriate permits are attained. And both rock climbers and hikers visiting Yosemite Valley should make note of which trails are appropriate for them.

Not everyone is cut out to hike every trail in Yosemite, so you should be careful to pick a trail that suits your physical abilities. You might also want to consider planning a hike for the middle of the week if possible to avoid the big weekend crowds.

YosemiteHikes.com is a great resource for trails through Yosemite Valley and provides information on each hike’s crowdedness, rise in elevation, and scenery rating on a five star scale.  Highlights you can expect to see in Yosemite Valley include:  El Capitan, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, Vernal Fall, and the Gates of the Valley.
