Are chain tires necessary?

We want to go to Half Dome. What do we need to know about the cable route?
Generally, the Half Dome cable route is up and running the week before Memorial Day weekend and stays up until Columbus Day in October. However, the dates may fluctuate based on weather conditions. If you plan to hike the 8.2 mile Half Dome cable route, you may have to obtain a permit. In January 2010, the National Park Service announced that permits are required to utilize the cable route on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and also federal holidays. This new rule was created to limit overcrowding as the route attracts approximately 800 visitors per day. The National Recreation Reservation Service issues a maximum of 400 permits per day and charges a processing fee of $1.50. Permits may be purchased four months to one week in advance.
