Fun Yosemite Winter Activities

Winter is considered one of the best times of year to visit Yosemite National Park. This is because winter in Yosemite is cold but temperate, creating idyllic conditions for hikes, ice-skating, skiing, photography, and other adventures in the park. It’s the time of year that sees the least visitors to Yosemite, so you can enjoy the park at its most serene and peaceful state. Plus, most of the trees in Yosemite National Park are evergreens, so despite the cold of winter, you’ll still see a great deal of life and color throughout the park.

A number of great Yosemite winter activities can only be enjoyed in the colder months, giving you and your family a number of great reasons to plan a trip to Yosemite this winter. Hiking, for example, is open year-round. Certain roads get closed when snowfall is heavy or when conditions are too icy, but Yosemite Valley is open year-round and offers a number of trails to stunning locations within the park. Snowfall is usually light enough that you can hike through the valley floor without snowshoes or cross-country skis. But there is usually enough snow in certain areas to make great snowman with your friends or family.

Ice-skating is another favorite activity during winter in Yosemite. Curry Village has an ice-skating rink that visitors to the park can rent skates at and enjoy hours of fun on the ice. When you finish skating, buy hot chocolate and revel in the company of your friends and the cozy atmosphere of the Village. This area also has several fun dining establishments and shops that are perfect for families.

This year, thanks to low snowfall, people were enjoy ice-skating on Tenaya Lake in Yosemite Valley. The lake was open for ice-skating for the first time in many years, offering a rare opportunity to skate in Yosemite Valley.  However, the lake is now closed – but the good news is that the Badger Pass Ski Area is now open!

Visitors to the park during winter also enjoy photography during the winter months. The low light of winter and the lack of distracting crowds create ideal settings for photographers to capture stunning photos of Yosemite Valley and the rest of the park. Other Yosemite winter activities include skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding. Many of these activities are available in the Badger Pass Ski Area when snowfall permits.
