Stay Hydrated

This 16-mile climb can drain the body of liquids and lead to dehydration and altitude sickness. The ascent takes you 4,500 feet above the valley floor. Climbers should pack plenty of water and drink regularly. You must hydrate even when you are not thirsty. By the time you notice thirst, your body is already dehydrated. You should also pack more water than you need in the event that you lose water in unforeseeable circumstances during the climb.

Safety Comes First

Climbers should take advantage of all the safety equipment put in place by the park. Observing all the details and the necessary safeguards ensures exercising responsible climbing. Climbers should never engage the peak alone. Use proper climbing equipment, and inspect all the gear before embarking. People attempting this climb should take advantage of the steel cables bolted into the granite that assist climbers during the last 400 feet of the ascent. This part of the climb practically vertical, presenting the most dangerous stretch. Avoid areas that are not regularly trafficked as well.

Give Yourself Time

Due to the difficulty and length of the climb at Half Dome; it is critical to give yourself time to make the trip. Book a cabin in the park so that you can get an early start. For even the most experienced climbers, the day should start at 5:30 a.m. at the latest in order to make it past the Vernal Waterfall and reach the summit before dark. Check the weather conditions, and plan your climb extensively. Failing to do any of these things can lead to getting stranded in dangerous situations such as lightning storms. Once your plans are in place and you have observed the safety precautions, enjoy your hike up Half Dome. Push the limits of your experience and see the beauty that this part of Yosemite has to offer.
