Catering to a Kid's Idea of Fun

It’s a precious thing to be able to introduce children to Yosemite National Park. Such is the power of this place—its epic landscapes, its rich sample of Sierra Nevada ecology, its interlaced natural and human histories—that it can serve as an unforgettable gateway to a lifelong interest in wilderness. The lighter crowds and ethereal scenery of autumn provide an ideal backdrop for young travelers to experience Yosemite. Here are three options for topnotch kid-friendly activities. (Don't miss our Yosemite For Kids - Infographic for even more fun!) Explore the Mariposa Grove Some 500 giant sequoias—the biggest stand in Yosemite—compose the Mariposa Grove near Wawona. This stupendous cathedral of aromatic wood and scaly needles is a transcendent place year-round. It’s especially quiet this time of year. When the first winter snows close the access road, you can hike, snowshoe or ski into the grove—adding all the more fun for kids. Go Ice Skating What ushers in the winter season better than ice skating? If conditions allow, the Curry Village Ice Rink in Yosemite Valley is scheduled to open on November 22 this year, giving the whole family the chance to skate in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable. Go on a “Night Prowl” Yosemite is strikingly scenic during the day, but what happens when the sun sets and the moon rises? The kids will love the excitement of an easy, safe nocturnal exploration on a ranger-led “Night Prowl,” which focuses on the park’s nighttime critters. Night Prowls usually start at 8:30 p.m. and last around an hour and a half, but check the Yosemite Guide for the current schedule. Whether it’s looping around on an ice rink, learning about bats under the stars, or standing next to the biggest organisms on the planet, children won’t be bored in Yosemite, that’s for sure. The park’s a marvel for all ages!
